Swearing by Blood: Netaji Subhash Bose
I had witnessed a pure and unselfish form of politics and public life. The freedom fighters of pre-independence years toiled for the nation without any personal motives. The only gain they expected from politics was âBlood, sweat, toil, and tears.â And when I entered politics, these were the only perks I ever demanded.
In 1945, as a young eight-year-old, I remember listening to the radio messages of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose broadcast from Japan. His call was, âGive me your blood and I will give you independence.â At home, most of our conversations centred around independence, development, Gandhiji, satyagraha movements, protest marches, etc. I grew up with the firm belief that service to the nation was the only career worth pursuing. Netajiâs messages were inspirational and he called upon the nation to fight the British and achieve independence. I was moved by his ideology and passion and, to swear my allegiance to him, cut my fore-arm, and in my own blood wrote that I would support Netaji to liberate India. Such was the brand of politics that shaped my childhood.
Therefore, it was no surprise that I left a successful business life to join politics and engage myself in nation building. My political speeches were filled with Gandhian ideologies and the focus was always to cleanse the nation of corruption at all levels and build a new and progressive India.
